Payton Morse, Costa Rica, Spring 2019
“Similar to the US, people in Costa Rica are urged to stay put and physically distance themselves. Ticos (Costa Ricans) who I have spoken to/ follow on social media have been spending a lot of time outside. Beaches, National Parks, and Religious centers were ordered to close on March 23rd. The largest area of active cases is near San Jose, the capital (a dense urban area so obviously it would be worse there).”
Country’s Response:
“Costa Rica has restricted borders until mid-May (as of 4/22). Tourists and residents are allowed to leave but may not return until May however, the government urges anyone in CR to stay put. There is a nationwide driving ban and CR inaugurated a Corona-specific hospital so avoid contamination with other healthcare facilities. Fortunately, there is a continuing downward trend of COVID-19 active cases in CR.”
Current Situation:
“There has been an increase in those recovering from COVID-19 since early April. Costa Rica is an extremely Catholic country so to see a ban on religious gatherings was surprising and purely has caused some tension. There have only been about 6 COVID-19 related deaths reported in CR.”
