Kelley Garland, Fulbright 2014

“I was a Fulbright ETA in the Czech Republic 2016-2017 after I graduated and have kept in touch with my students in regards to the outbreak there. The Czech Republic responded rather quickly to COVID-19, with schools moving to virtual in the end of February/early March.
Essential stores were closed and the government required face masks (which gained traction in our media about their response in recent weeks).  My students live in the countryside, so a much different experience than those in say Prague, but they have been social distancing outside through hikes a lot, but also using their free time to make cloth masks for those in the hospitals and neighbors.”

Country’s Response: “They closed the borders to all except citizens and other specific groups. They have now started to relax these policies as they have significantly flattened the curve. Everyone had to self-quarantine if coming from another country and it was mandatory to wear a face mask outside and in public places-- even if you were running or walking. Now they are starting to lift restrictions and have begun to open up sports facilities, DIY shops, and some others that were previously closed due to quarantine restrictions.”

Current Situation:
“They are currently averaging about 150 new cases a day, which is down from a peak of nearly 400.
There have been 200 deaths and nearly 7,000 cases, with about 1,800 recovered.”
