Magali Garcia-Pletsch, Studied in Cusco, Perú, Spring 2012

“I spoke with a former host sibling at the end of March. He told me that the Peruvian government had declared a state of emergency and quarantine, approximately two weeks earlier (so, mid-March). He's a university student and told me that his studies are "on standby" because of these shut-downs.”

Country’s Response:
“According to my host-sibling: For the duration of the quarantine, Peruvians were not allowed to leave their homes, except to go to grocery stores and pharmacies. Universities, schools, restaurants, cinemas were all closed. Only doctors/nurses and the media were allowed to go to work at that time. He also told me that a large part of the Peruvian population is given an amount of money by the government to help them survive. Their borders were also closed for any travel into the country. In his words, "It is really admirable what Peru is doing. Fortunately, the prevention measures were taken in time, and economic support is received from the government." According to the U.S. embassy, these measures are in effect at least until April 26th.

Current Situation:
“Unfortunately, as of April 19th, Peru had 15,000 confirmed cases. They have the second-highest number of cases in all of Latin America (only behind Brazil).”
